Omega Protein Corporation is the largest processor, marketer and distributor of protein-rich fish meal and Omega-3 fish oil products in the United States. The Company produces a variety of products derived from menhaden, an Omega-3 rich fish that is not utilized for seafood, but which is abundantly available along the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Coasts. The menhaden fish is not genetically modified or genetically enhanced.
All of the Company's products contain long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids. The Omega-3 long-chain fatty acids are commonly referred to as "essential fatty acids" because the human body does not produce them. Instead, essential fatty acids must be obtained from outside sources, such as food or special supplements. Long-chain Omega-3s are also commonly referred to as "good fats" for their health benefits, as opposed to the "bad fats" that create or aggravate health conditions through long-term consumption. Scientific research suggests that long-chain Omega-3s, as part of a healthy diet, may provide significant benefits for common health issues such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and arthritis.
Under its patented production process, the Company produces OmegaPure™, a taste-free, odorless food additive that is the only marine source of essential long-chain Omega-3s directly affirmed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a food ingredient which is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) for direct human consumption. In addition to being extremely stable, OmegaPure™ brand Omega-3s are kosher and organic.
The Company processes several grades of fish meal (regular meal and specialty meals), as well as fish oil and fish solubles. The Company's fish meal products are primarily used as a protein ingredient in animal feeds for swine, cattle, aquaculture and household pets. Fish oil is utilized for animal and aquaculture feeds, industrial applications, and for additives to human food products. The Company's fish solubles are sold primarily to livestock feed manufacturers, aquaculture feed manufacturers and for use as an organic fertilizer.
